Mercury Thermostat

This is a heavy metal (mercury) switch in the thermostat that controls the furnace that heats our home. Mercury, liquid at room temperature, is literally heavier than lead. The mercury is in the glass bulb. It completes an electrical connection when the glass bulb is level.
